Thursday, September 8, will go down as a historic day in the United Kingdom.

It was announced earlier during the day that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland as worries started to amplify with her family members, who dropped everything to travel up to Scotland. Unfortunately, those medical concerns were not reduced as the death of the Queen was announced in the evening. It was a moment of great significance for the country that lost a loyal servant who had dedicated 70 years of service to this great country.

Many celebrities, politicians and other people of major significance paid their fitting tributes and respect to Britain's now longest reigning Monarch, whose son Charles III is now the King of this country. The implications of this news on all aspects of life is expected to be great, especially sport too, with a congested fixture schedule upon the horizon this weekend.

The EFL announced that the two fixtures on Friday night between Burnley vs Norwich and Tranmere Rovers vs Stockport County were cancelled out of respect for the Queen. The statement on this news went: "Today, the EFL was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

"Over a 70-year reign, Her Majesty proudly served the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with distinction.

"The Queen had a keen interest in sport, including football. Her Majesty attended numerous FA Cup Finals throughout her reign and was an advocate for our national sport through her many years of service.

"The Monarch was at Wembley Stadium in 1966 for perhaps our national game's most famous moment to present captain Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet Trophy after England beat West Germany to win the World Cup.

"On behalf of the League and its Clubs, we join the rest of the nation and people across the world in mourning the passing of our Queen, Elizabeth II.

"The thoughts of everybody at the EFL and our Clubs are with the Royal Family at this sad time for our country."

"Consideration in respect of EFL fixtures will be discussed with the Government and the wider sport sector during the period ahead, and an appropriate announcement will be made at the earliest opportunity."

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are expected to hold a meeting with the Premier League, EFL, and the FAWSL at around 9 AM on Friday morning, with the common consensus being that all fixtures will be postponed this weekend as the country mourns the death of Her Majesty.

Off the pitch, though, despite the largely respectful reaction to the news that has created headlines all across the world, there was uproar on social media when a certain ex-footballer and TalkSport regular came out with a rather distasteful tweet. Trevor Sinclair, who represented QPR and West Ham In his career, tweeted via The Express: "Racism was outlawed in England in the 60s & it's been allowed to thrive, so why should black & brown mourn!"

His account has been taken off Twitter momentarily and that tweet deleted on his behalf, but the backlash received by TalkSport listeners calling for his sacking were huge. As a result, the media company had to come out and clarify their stance. They tweeted on their official account: 'We have been trying to make contact with Trevor Sinclair following opinions expressed on his Twitter account. talkSPORT does not support those views expressed and is investigating the matter.'
