Tottenham are leaving themselves an awful lot to do in what remains of the transfer window if they are to seal a number of incomings and outgoings before the 11pm deadline. Having seen player exits step up over the past week with Alfie Devine, Troy Parrott, Djed Spence and Dane Scarlett all sealing loan moves elsewhere, the quartet now look set to be joined by Sergio Reguilon and Japhet Tanganga heading out on loan.

Reguilon will link up with Manchester United amid previous speculation over a return to Spain, while Tanganga heads to Germany after Spurs struck an agreement with Augsburg for the versatile defender. There's still a lot more for Tottenham to do in terms of outgoings, with Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele and Bryan Gil's futures up in the air ahead of the 11pm cut-off point.

One player who does look set to seal a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the day is out is Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson. A deal is now in place for the Wales international to move from the East Midlands club and the attacker will pen a long-term contract in N17.

Conor Gallagher is of interest to Spurs but a potential move across the capital will all rest on what happens with Hojbjerg. Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly has also been linked with a late move to the Lilywhites but that again is likely to be determined by players heading out of the door.

Once Tottenham have concluded their summer transfer business, Ange Postecoglou and the club will have to submit a 25-man squad to the Premier League by 2pm on Wednesday, September 13. As ever, clubs cannot name more than 17 non-homegrown players on the list and the remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be homegrown.

All teams are also able to name players 21 and under on an under-21 list, which frees up space in the 25-man squad in the process. For the 2023/24 campaign, under-21 players will have had to be born on or after January 1, 2002 to make the list.

It is very much a balancing act for Tottenham, especially due to the high number of non-homegrown players in the squad.

That was put to Postecoglou by football.london in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Burnley fixture and the 58-year-old opened up on the importance of planning ahead as he looks to build a team for the future.

"Yeah it is a balance, it is important because it's not just about this window but where you will find yourself in the next couple of windows," explained the Australian. "There has to be a strategy behind it. You've got some U21 players who in the next couple of years will not be able to fit under that criteria.

"I'm really keen on building a team here so we don't want to see as much movement as there has been in this window in the next two or three. To do that we're trying to build a squad that isn't going to require too many many adjustments and part of that is knowing that we need a homegrown quota so we can fill that in, whether that's with players coming from the academy or within the league. I think that is important."

So how exactly do things look for Tottenham in terms of their homegrown, non-homegrown and under-21 numbers going into the final few hours of the transfer window? football.london takes a look below.

Premier League

As things stand prior to Reguilon joining Manchester United on a season-long loan deal, Tottenham have 20 non-homegrown numbers on their books. Once the Spaniard has signed on at Old Trafford, Spurs will need to reduce the numbers by a further two, with Lloris and Ndombele the standout candidates to take Tottenham down to the magic number.

If the numbers still remain over the allotted 17 places come the end of the transfer window, then Postecoglou and Spurs will find themselves in a position where they have to leave players out of their 25-man Premier League squad.

If Tottenham are bang on the limit of 17 players for their non-homegrown numbers then only eight homegrown players will be allowed to be included on the submitted list to the Premier League. Currently on ten homegrown players if you include Tanganga and academy player Brooklyn Lyons-Foster, Johnson will take Tanganga's spot once both transfers have been finalised.

Tottenham would still need to leave two of their homegrown players out the final squad, with Lyons-Foster and Harvey White the favourites to make way. Potentially add Gallagher and Kelly into the mix as well if late transfer deals can be agreed upon, others would also have to make way to accommodate the aforementioned players.

As Postecoglou mentioned in his press conference, it is very much a balancing act.
