Micky van de Ven has been left out of the Netherlands squad named by manager Ronald Koeman. The Dutch are in a battle to qualify for Euro 2024 in Group B with Greece and Ireland still in with a chance of getting to the finals in Germany next month.

The 22-year-old made his debut for his country last month after starting the year in brilliant form for Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou but his season has been put on hold this week after a serious injury against Chelsea. Van de Ven was taken off before half-time in Monday's 4-1 defeat to the Blues after damaging his hamstring.

Rushing back to defend a counter-attack from Mauricio Pochettino's side he pulled up immediately while sprinting toward his goal and had to be helped off the field by physios. Having been a central part of Postecoglou's plans so far this term it is a hammer blow for both club and country at this key stage of the season.

"It's too early but looking at Micky you're thinking it's a pretty significant one so you'd assume he'll be out for a little while," the Spurs boss said after the game on Monday. There has been a slither of positivity since then, though, as football.london understands he will not need surgery.

This is the second time in two years that he has had issues with his hamstring though after he missed 12 games and three months with Wolfsburg in 2022. Postecoglou must also balance Van de Ven's troubles with the suspension of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie whilst James Maddison also faces a period on the sidelines.

Now, although itis unsurprising, Van de Ven has not been selected in the squad for his country's crucial games next week. Holland play Ireland and Gibraltar, the two weakest sides in the group, knowing that their fate is in their own hands.

Van de Ven won't be able to help his country though but may yet be targetting a place in the squad for Germany 2024. He is yet to start a game for The Oranje but should he find the sort of form that has earned a first call-up there is every chance or that changing in the near future.

For now the attention will be on recovering from his Spurs setback.
