Chelsea return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon as they face reigning champions and current leaders Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. After a truly action-packed Monday Night Football win against Tottenham earlier in the week, Mauricio Pochettino will be determined to pick up back-to-back wins in the Premier League against two of their top six rivals.

After Dejan Kulusevski handed Spurs the early lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it looked as if though Ange Postecoglou's team could run away with it. However, Cristian Romero then gave away a penalty and was shown a red card, with Cole Palmer dispatching from 12 yards out.

Early into the second-half, Destiny Udogie was then sent off for a second yellow card, reducing the hosts to nine men. Nicolas Jackson then took advantage of Tottenham's high-line and the fact they had two fewer players on the pitch, with the Senegal international converting a late hat-trick to earn a 4-1 win for Chelsea on the road.

Jackson, deservedly so, will take all of the headlines after he netted three times to win the Blues the match, but someone who once again deserves a special mention is Palmer. The 21-year-old has been quite simply superb since arriving for £42.5million on transfer deadline day over the summer and he scored his third goal for the Blues on Monday.

It is the England Under-21 international's seventh direct goal contribution – with three goals and four assists – since making the move to the capital. Palmer continues to flourish under Pochettino, who seemingly has immense trust in the former Manchester City attacker.

The Manchester-born playmaker will come up against City for the first time since leaving the club on Sunday afternoon and he will face Pep Guardiola – his former manager who, over the years, has publicly been a massive fan of Palmer's talents. After making his senior debut for the Citizens in September 2020, Guardiola hailed Palmer as "incredible" and compared him to Phil Foden, who at the time, was an up and coming star from City's academy system.

"He started a little bit shy, but that's normal," Guardiola said on Palmer over three years ago. "He is an incredible young lad in the training sessions. Two months ago he has showed us a lot of things. He has a good future in this club."

The City boss continued: "He is a humble guy. He is a guy with incredible finishing, like Phil. He had his chance to score. His debut in this competition against a Premier League side, it will be good for his future.

"Again, thank you to the academy for these players. We get players from the academy's work."

Palmer will be hoping he can haunt Guardiola on Sunday as Chelsea go head-to-head with Man City. The Blues attacker has shown in games with Arsenal and Tottenham that he excels against some of the stronger sides in the division, so Pochettino and Chelsea will be hoping that is once again the case.

Against Arsenal, Pochettino went with Palmer as the false nine and no recognised striker and that is something we could see against City. The Gunners could not cope with Palmer and the way he liked to drop deep and attract centre-backs with him, so it is perhaps a plan Pochettino could repeat at the weekend, although Jackson's hat-trick on Monday makes it difficult to drop him from the side.
