Nuno Espirito Santo has expressed how thankful he is for the support given to him and his side as Tottenham Hotspur ended a run of three straight league defeats with victory over Aston Villa.
A carefully executed effort from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on the edge of the penalty area gave Spurs the lead in the first half and the hosts went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Villa equalised in the 67th minute thanks to a goal from England striker Ollie Watkins, before Son Heung-min helped secure victory by firing a low ball across the box that was eventually bundled over the line by Villa defender Matt Targett.
Although Tottenham had several chances to win the game by more than one goal, they had to dig deep to get all three points, and Espirito Santo thinks that the crowd helped them to do exactly that.
“There were more goals in this game, the chances that we had to really kill the game, but the end was about being resilient and hold the ball there and not concede any chances to Villa,” he said, whilst speaking in a post-match interview with BBC Sport.
“The support that they [the Tottenham fans] gave us today was huge.
“We are very thankful.”
The international break puts domestic action on hold for a week now, but Spurs will be looking to build from this win when they face Newcastle on October 17.
Four South Americans – Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal - have been selected to represent their national teams over the course of next week and Espirito Santo provided an update on their post-international break quarantine situations.
“I can update, they will go and they will return and they will return on different situations,’ he said.
“They will have to isolate, but we are fortunate enough to have the Lodge and work normally with the team.”
