Charlton Athletic have confirmed the departure of manager Nigel Adkins following a run of form that leaves the south London club, who had started the campaign among the League One promotion favourites, 22nd in the table.

It is the lowest position in the club’s history.

The Addicks have won just twice all season and Tuesday evening’s 3-2 defeat at home to Accrington Stanley was the final straw for owner Thomas Sandgaard, who had flown in from the United States to watch the game.

Former midfielder Johnnie Jackson will take over as caretaker having previously been in interim charge in March when Lee Bowyer left for Birmingham City.

He will be in the dugout away to second-placed Sunderland on Saturday afternoon and will be assisted by Jason Euell.

“Nigel joined us at the end of last season and had an immediate impact, as we finished the season well, just missing out on a play-off place on goal difference,” Sandgaard said in a statement on the club’s website.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to carry that form into this season.

“I’d like to thank Nigel for his hard work, positivity and continued professionalism during his time at the club. We are all disappointed that it hasn’t worked out this season and we wish him the very best for the future.”

It is unclear if Jackson will be considered for the post permanently but with the club four points off safety and 13 from a play-off spot after 13 games, a swift appointment is likely.

Charlton face home games against Doncaster and Rotherham after this weekend's trip to the North East.
