Arsenal got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Burnley at the weekend. The Gunners didn't make the fastest of starts and could easily have fallen behind when David Raya's superb low save kept out Johan Berg Gudmundsson, but eventually got in front as Leandro Trossard poked home on the stoke of half time.

Vincent Kompany's side came back into it though and equalised through Luca Koleosho. The scores didn't stay level for long however, as William Saliba headed Arsenal back in front a minute later, before a well taken third from Alex Zinchenko put the game out of sight. A late red card for Fabio Vieira did add some jeopardy, but the Gunners held on to keep within touching distance of Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. Here football.london takes a look back at the talking points from the game.

Terrific Trossard

Ask any footballer and they'll tell you what they dream of doing is receiving the adoration of the crowd after scoring a goal. As Leandro Trossard poked home Arsenal's opener on Saturday he was denied that opportunity by an unfortunate collision with the post that left him stricken on the floor.

Not to worry, there was to be another chance for him to get the limelight as he was taken off nine minutes from time. Well not exactly. Instead Trossard's moment in the sun was stolen somewhat by Bukayo Saka also being substituted at the same time and receiving a standing ovation meant for the 28-year-old. As Trossard strolled off he almost nervously offered a light applause to the Emirates faithful, and disappeared onto the bench in typically understated fashion. This though, is what the Arsenal squad love so much about him.

If you were to count Arsenal's best players this season, the Belgian would probably not be the first name on your list. And yet quietly Trossard has become the Gunners' top scorer this season while providing two further assists for his teammates. With a quiet efficiency he has carried on bringing the same level of quality that breathed life into Arsenal's title charge after his arrival in January.

As well as his lowkey style, Trossard's superpower is his ability to bring the best from those around him. Gabriel Martinelli has looked unstoppable since the Belgian's ascension into the team as a centre forward in the absence of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah, while Saka finds new levels of shine.

"I think he connects everybody," Mikel Arteta said of his £21million winter signing. "He’s so intelligent. I think he moves in ways that attracts people that generates spaces and options for people. Today he did that really good because it was so difficult and the spaces were so small to attack. He gave us a lot of threat and possibilities to connect and find spaces for us."

Had he not struggled with hamstring problems this season, then it's hard not to wonder how many more goals the Belgian could have been involved in. Whenever Arsenal have needed him this season, he has been a difference maker.

Arteta and VAR...again

Discussions over referees and VAR are as tedious as they are maddening. After a week of banal debate over Arsenal's reaction to Mikel Arteta's reaction to Anthony Gordon's goal for Newcastle, even the Spaniard seemed to be sick of talking about officials.

"I think we had a lot of reactions after that match," he said in his pre-match press conference. "It’s time to move forward, focus on Burnley and focus on tomorrow's game."

After Arsenal largely strolled to a comfortable home victory over Burnley it seemed as though the conversation could finally move on. Thank God! Arteta though, had other ideas. As he walked in to conduct his post-match media duties, the Spaniard could not resist listening to the devil on his shoulder.

"With the red card… yes, VAR was right," he said when asked about the decision to uphold Fabio Vieira's red card. "The referee was right. Really good decision, really positive from Mikel to speak about that. Good decision."

It was a compliment served with a backhand that Arteta's sporting idol Rafael Nadal would have been proud of. His broadcast interviews were even more scathing, and yet again we're forced to talk about Arteta's behaviour towards officials.

There was a period a few years ago when Arsenal seemed to be picking up a red card every match. Having been asked about it almost every week for a season, Arteta eventually decided that the best course of action was not to talk about the issue and hope that it would eventually go away. The plan worked then, and there's no reason why it can't now.

There's no doubt Arsenal were hard done by at St James' Park. There was a clear foul on Gabriel and the goal should not have stood. But as he seeks to control the narrative around more positive displays, Arteta is probably best served following his own advice and moving on, instead of dragging his side back into the murky waters of refereeing ineptitude.

Injuries racking up again

Arsenal's 3-1 win over Burnley was far from their scintillating best, but before we dive into any criticism of the display, it's worth remembering how many injuries they had. Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus had the Gunners' absentee list at five already before late absences for Ben White and Cedric brough that number up to seven.

Throw in the fact that Eddie Nketiah and Takehiro Tomiyasu were both struggling with injury problems and this was an Arsenal squad at the bare bones. "We need to get players back because at the moment we have eight players not available and that’s a lot," Arteta said of the growing injury crisis. "In December we have 11 games coming up so we’d better get everyone ready."

White's absence is at least expected to be a short term one. "Yesterday in training he wasn’t comfortable," Arteta expanded after the game. "He didn’t look right. But Ben won’t give you much. He always wants to be on the pitch and he wants to hide anything that is in there. But we highlighted something happening there that we noticed in the last two weeks as well. We wanted to protect him today. It was the right call from the physios and the medical department and tomorrow we will assess him and understand what’s happening."

Odegaard meanwhile is also expected to be back after the international break. "I am going to have a meeting now with the medical department and Edu to understand everyone's situation but I think he is going to be back after the international break," Arteta said. "I don't know exactly what is the decision and the communication at the moment."

The Gunners should also have Gabriel Jesus available for when they take on Brentford in two weeks time. As they approach a jam packed December though, managing his injury-hit squad is probably the biggest challenge Arteta has to face.
