All the eyes of the footballing world were on Arsenal it seemed at Newcastle when the Gunners suffered their one-goal defeat which sparked an angry reaction from Mikel Arteta in his post-match interviews and press conference. It spawned from the Magpies being awarded a goal despite three potential offences of which two were deemed inconclusive.

However, the main one which caused the most controversy was the push by Joelinton on the back of Gabriel Magalhaes which then allowed the midfielder to play the ball, arguably with his arm, to Anthony Gordon to hit the ball home. It was something which caused mass frustration in the game and debates across all clubs’ supporters.

The Premier League's Independent Key Match Incidents Panel however ruled that the VAR had indeed made the correct decision in giving the goal. A 4-1 vote of five panellists said that, “Although Joelinton does have his hands on Gabriel, there isn't enough to award a foul as Gabriel had made an action to play the ball before any contact.”

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown went on a scathing rant on TalkSport regarding the vote. "I don't agree with the panel,” he said. “I would prefer actually if we're going to name names, I would prefer to look at three former top referees who have all looked at this incident very closely.

"Firstly we look at Chris Foy, he said for him, it was a foul. Dermot Gallagher, top referee, and former referee, said it was a foul. Mark Clattenburg, said it was a foul.

"So we can all aim at the evidence, I don't even know who the panel is made up of, I'm not sure it can be particularly independent, but I simply don't agree."

And Keown is sure to be the first to point out the inconsistency which occurred during the clash between the Gunners and Burnley just one week later. A cross played into the box saw Saka’s arms on the back of Luca Koleosho as the wide player headed the ball back into the box.

The ball dropped to Burnley defender Jordan Beyer whose miscued header redirected back and into the Burnley goal. James Trafford clawed the ball away but it looked to all the world like it could have crossed the line.

Michael Oliver however blew for a foul by Saka before the ball crossed the line, meaning no review could of course take place. The margins between the two incidents seem incredibly fine and the fact a whistle was blown for this and not at Newcastle again highlights the inconsistency between the decisions.

Arteta will certainly be justified in his frustrations at Newcastle when what is an almost identical moment of contact between two players leads to a call against his side. It is unlikely there will be much follow up however in this case.
