Arsenal secured a dramatic victory over Premier League title rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. A tense game at the Emirates Stadium saw few big opportunities for either side, with the Gunners feeling aggrieved by the referee's decision to not send City midfielder Mateo Kovacic off in the first half.

But Mikel Arteta's side rallied after the break, eventually netting the only goal of the game through Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian international fired a shot past Ederson in the 86th minute, with the strike taking a huge deflection that came off defender Nathan Ake

Now, football.london has taken a look at how the national media reacted to the result below.

The Mirror

"The reigning Premier League champions fell to their third domestic defeat in a row at the Emirates Stadium. It was a cagey affair at the Emirates Stadium, with Gabriel Martinelli eventually scoring in the 87th minute - his strike from range deflecting into the net via a touch from Nathan Ake.

"Guardiola's side had looked ominous from the off but were unable to continue their momentum. For large swaths of the second-half, City struggled to find their rhythm. Guardiola was sure that Rodri's absence - with the Spaniard suspended following his red card against Nottingham Forest - played a role in the defeat."

"Second half substitute Takehiro Tomiyasu nodded down a long ball on the edge of the City area, Kai Havertz laid it back into the path of Martinelli and his curling shot deflected off the face of Ake, wrong-footed Ederson and scuttled across the line.

"The Emirates exploded. In the stands, fans reached across into the front row of the press box to grasp the hand of Martin Keown, another link with Arsenal’s glorious past.

"'One-nil to the Arsenal,' they sang deliriously, reliving another chunk of their history. The stadium was ablaze.

"And when the final whistle went, there was a tremendous roar of elation and relief and catharsis. A dragon had been slain. Arsenal had crossed the Rubicon.

"There is an argument to say that in all their years of striving through Wenger's decline, this is the most important result since they last won the title nearly 20 years ago. It took them up to second place in the table, level on points with leaders Tottenham, ahead of City.

"And as their fans streamed past the statue of Adams, across the bridge and into the throngs heading for Arsenal underground station, they believed a new generation of heroes was preparing to take its place in the pantheon."

The Guardian

"It is what is called getting your substitutions right. As Mikel Arteta luxuriated in his first league win against Manchester City as a manager, one to enhance seriously the title prospects of his Arsenal team, to fortify their belief, he could reflect on how his stars had aligned after a triple change on 76 minutes. For so long, it had looked as though it could be another refereeing story.

"Nobody knows how this showpiece would have panned out if Mateo Kovacic had been sent off in the 35th minute. But Arsenal would have liked to find out.

"The City midfielder was a lucky boy. Already booked for a terrible tackle on Martin Odegaard, Kovacic was playing with fire when he stretched in on Declan Rice to commit a clear foul.

"Rather than wave a second yellow card, which felt inevitable, the referee, Martin Oliver, allowed Kovacic to stay on. Arsenal rode out the storm.

"Arteta had sent on the fit-again Gabriel Martinelli at the start of the second half for his first action in three weeks and his mass move was to introduce Thomas Partey (also back to fitness) Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz. The trio would link up to create the big chance for Martinelli towards the end and how he took it."
