Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino face missing out on the potential signings of Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney as a result of Todd Boehly's multi-million-pound spending.

The Blues owner has spent over £1billion on new players since taking over the football club from Roman Abramovich in 2022. Any possible breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations have been swerved courtesy of the long contracts offered to new players.

The influx of thousands available to players means many of the current squad at Stamford Bridge are earning close to £100,000-per-week or more. However, the wage bill paid out by Boehly and Clearlake Capital could have a huge impact on Pochettino's hopes of signing a new striker in January or next summer.

Brentford's Ivan Toney and Napoli's Victor Osimhen have both been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. Both players will cost Chelsea £80m+, with their wages expected to surpass the £100k-per-week mark.

The Telegraph's Matt Law has claimed that the club will have to work around their wage structure when conducting any further business. "The biggest problem Chelsea have with all this, and this is what's going to be fascinating, is the wage structure," he told the London is Blue podcast.

“They are not going to be able to sign a top striker within their wage structure. They are not even going to be able to sign Ivan Toney in their wage structure. Ivan Toney isn’t moving to Chelsea on £100,000 a week, or £120,000 a week, or £90,000 and millions in bonuses if they win the Champions League and win the league.

"Ivan Toney has got one big last opportunity at a contract, he’s going for £150,000 to £200,000 a week plus, and that’s where he’s going.

“Similarly, you have to imagine with Osimhen, if he comes to England he’s chasing the big money. He turned down Saudi Arabia in the summer, now that was more a football decision, but they would have been offering him absolute fortunes, he’s not joining Chelsea on £100,000, £120,000, £130,000 a week either.

“None of the A-list or even B-list strikers are coming for that money. I find this really interesting. Chelsea are going to have to shatter that wage structure that they’ve implemented elsewhere in the team to sign the type of striker that they and Pochettino will want, unless they’re going to take a chance on someone."

Should Chelsea's wages become a problem, Pochettino and the recruitment team at Cobham will have a decision to make. Nicolas Jackson's recent form has provided an argument to keep patient with the striker - scoring four goals in four games.

With Christopher Nkunku set to return to action and Armando Broja back from injury, Chelsea already have three first-team options at their disposal already. £52.5million was spent on bringing Nkunku from RB Leipzig in the summer and the France international is reportedly earning £195,00-per-week (via Sportrac), meaning he could be the answer.

Elsewhere, a possible cheaper alternative to Osimhen and Toney could be pondered, it's just about finding the middle ground between a raw striker and prolific goalscorer.

The pool for goalscorers available to Chelsea ahead of January isn't very large. Away from the world-class superstars that will cost the club a hefty amount of money, there are only a handful of standout names.

Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface has emerged as one of Europe's most prolific strikers this season with 11 goals in 16 appearances in Germany. The Nigeria international, still only 22, has been linked with Arsenal and Real Madrid recently after his heroics for Xabi Alonso's team and could be the perfect fit for Chelsea.

Physically strong, pacey and capable of holding the ball up for the wide players, Boniface is an all-round number nine. He only joined Leverkusen in the summer, although a move to the Premier League could tempt him.

Another Bundesliga striker pulling up trees is Serhou Guirassy. The Stuttgart star has a £17million release clause that will become active in the winter, handing Chelsea a much cheaper alternative.

Like Boniface, Guirassy is enjoying a terrific season in front of goal with 16 goals in only 10 appearances - only Harry Kane has scored more than him.

If Chelsea are to comply with FFP rules and improve their forward line, the potential is there.
