The match briefly continued before approximately 20 fans sat down on the pitch, signalling to the referee that the medical emergency persisted.
As paramedics provided CPR to the affected individual on the sidelines, the referee made the decision to take both teams off the field. Subsequently, an hour after the initial stoppage, the match was officially abandoned while medical teams continued to attend to the patient.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told The Independent: “We were called yesterday at 9:28pm to reports of a person becoming unwell at Leyton Orient Football Club, on Brisbane Road.
“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an incident response officer, two medics in fast-response cars and an ambulance crew.
“Our first medic arrived in approximately four minutes. We treated a man at the scene, but very sadly, despite our teams’ best efforts, he was later pronounced dead.”
At the time of the abandonment, Leyton Orient were leading 1-0. The club took to X/Twitter to address the situation, stating:"The game is paused due to a crowd emergency. We're keeping everything crossed for those involved, and will update with further information when we have it."
The club then added: "The players are now being taken off the field of play. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Leyton Orient are with everyone involved. We will update further when we have more information."
Later on at 10.25pm, it was announced by the club that the game would not resume: "This evening’s match will not be restarted due to the ongoing medical emergency in the East Stand. All of our hopes are prayers are with the supporter and his loved ones at this incredibly distressing time."
