Arsenal star Leandro Trossard has admitted he is more than comfortable operating as an attacking midfielder. The Belgian international has mainly played at left-wing or centre-forward during his time at the Emirates Stadium, putting up some hugely impressive numbers despite limited game time.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion playmaker has registered 19 direct goal contributions in just 1670 minutes, meaning he provides a goal or an assist every 88 minutes in an Arsenal shirt. Recently, he has been utilised as a false nine flanked by Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

That is mainly due to the fact that first-choice frontman Gabriel Jesus has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. But Jesus is expected to return to fitness after the international break, leaving Mikel Arteta with a tough decision to make up top.

But Trossard’s recent comments on his favourite role to play may alert Arteta that he could play the 28-year-old alongside Saka, Jesus and Martinelli. When asked what position he feels most comfortable playing in, the diminutive attacker told the club’s official website: “That’s a tough question.

“I don’t really mind playing all of those positions up top, to be fair. If it’s left winger, as a false nine, even as an attacking midfielder, I don’t really have a straight answer for that.

“[As a kid I played] as a number ten, like a proper attacking midfielder back in the old days, or as a striker as well. I always try to be in the box and in good positions to score goals and with the quality that we have, I know I have to be there, especially if I play on the left wing, I need to be there when, for example, Bukayo Saka is on the ball on the right side, so yeah I follow my instinct there, to be honest, to get in the right positions to score goals.”

Kai Havertz has been operating as Arsenal’s most advanced midfielder in recent times. Despite his performance level slowly improving, the German international has still not produced the kind of attacking output you would expect from a £65million signing.

Considering Trossard’s displays have been so effective, it may be slightly unfair to drop the Belgian upon Jesus’ return to full fitness. But as the versatile playmaker says, he is more than capable of operating as an advanced midfielder. It is a position that he was utilised in occasionally during the Gunners’ pre-season tour but according to Transfermarkt, he has never played there in a competitive game for the north Londoners.

The prospect of a midfield containing Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice behind Jesus, Saka and Martinelli in attack certainly would be an exciting prospect for Arsenal supporters.
