Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and Manchester United icon Roy Keane have agreed that Arsenal need to sign a striker during the January transfer window if they want to win the Premier League title this season. The Gunners currently sit second in the league, level on points and goal difference with first-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who are top because they have scored more this term.

Mikel Arteta's side defeated reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon thanks to a late goal from Gabriel Martinelli. But Carragher has argued that the north London outfit still need a prolific goalscorer if they want to beat City in the long run.

Speaking on the Stick To Football Podcast, the former England international said: "I don’t think Arsenal can win the league with the squad that they have got right now. I think they would need to add to it in January."

Keane agreed with his fellow pundit's sentiment, claiming that Arsenal still lack physical players to get them through the tough games. The United hero said: "They can win the league, but they do need a striker.

"The players you are talking about coming in, gives Arsenal that physicality. It’s great when you watch a team that can play with the ball, but is also physically strong.

"You have seen City get stronger over the past couple of seasons, at set-pieces are huge. They need those physically strong players to get them over the line."

Arsenal have Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Leandro Trossard and even Kai Havertz as potential options at striker. But none of those players have netted 20 Premier League goals in a single campaign, something that Brentford's Ivan Toney has done.

Toney has recently been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, with Arteta said to be keen on the player due to his physical strengths. Gunners legend Ian Wright admitted that he can't see the Toney links going away anytime soon, with the north London side clearly in need of a talisman up top.

"The thing with the way we are playing, obviously we have spread the goals out last season, and yes it took us to a certain place," Wright said. "And I think the Toney links won’t go away because it’s blatantly obvious for everyone to see that with that focal point and having that player who scores those goals, that takes you somewhere else.

"You can’t question the endeavour of both of those players, Eddie and Jesus. At the moment, you look back at the Tottenham game and Jesus, for a player with that quality to get in that position at 1-0 up, those chances have to be buried.

"And I think Arsenal and what they are trying to do now, the margins are so small now and you can’t afford to be missing chances like that and not winning those games."
