Arsenal summer signing Kai Havertz has opened up on his decision to leave Chelsea during the summer transfer window and his preferred position.

The Gunners completed a £65million deal for Havertz last month in what was a somewhat surprising move. The German international became the second player to swap Stamford Bridge for the Emirates Stadium in the last six months, joining January signing and former teammate Jorginho in north London.

The 24-year-old made his unofficial Arsenal debut on Thursday during a pre-season friendly against Nurnberg, coming off the bench in the second half in a rather uneventful 1-1 draw. When discussing his cameo, Havertz told football.london: "I’m proud to finally be here.

"Obviously it was maybe not the best game in the second half but I am very happy to be part of this group and it’s going to be a process and I’m going to give everything."

There have been questions on what position the former Bayer Leverkusen starlet will play for Mikel Arteta's side having predominantly operated as a false nine during his time with the Blues. But the talented playmaker featured as a left-sided no.8 yesterday, a role that he has admitted will take a while to readjust to.

"Yeah, I’m quite flexible and I’ have played lots of positions over the last couple of years", Havertz said when asked about playing in the centre of the pitch. "Last year I came more off the number nine but I am used to this midfield position because I played there from a young age and now it’s time to just get all the movements back into my brain and hopefully it will be good on the pitch."

Arteta has played a major role in convincing players to join the club in recent years and Havertz has admitted that the way the Spaniard sees the game has impressed him. "He just spoke of the way he sees football, there’s so much strategy behind everything and this is what impressed me the most", he added when quizzed on what Arteta said to him before joining.

"From outside I have to say that Arsenal always felt like a family to me even when I played against them. To feel this energy from the players and fans was very nice."
