Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has slammed the decision of a few Premier League clubs to allow for loans between associated clubs to continue, calling for a huge overhaul of how the voting system should work. It came ahead of the January transfer window, with huge potential implications following it.

The proposed changes could've seen teams denied the chance to loan players from other clubs under the same ownership umbrella. The most pressing example has been that of Newcastle, because of their ownership being the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which also happens to own a number of teams in the Saudi Pro League.

The recent rise of investment there has seen a huge push towards landing some of the biggest players in the world to put the league on the map. Stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and more made their way to Saudi Arabia for big money over the past year.

In theory, any one of them could now join the Magpies in the January transfer window to help bolster their squad options for the second half of the season. The deals will have to fall within UEFA's fair market value for a loan though, meaning they couldn't just land them on a completely free basis without a fair explanation.

Nonetheless, it could give the side access to these top quality players that other teams may not be able to land for themselves. Newcastle aren't the only team with links under a multi-club model as Manchester City, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are just a few others - though their voting intentions are currently unknown.

With the vote results coming in on Tuesday, it was later revealed that 13 clubs voted in favour of a ban and seven voted against it. The threshold for any motion passing in the Premier League must be 14 votes, meaning it fell one short of being able to put a temporary block on these loans.
