Tottenham Hotspur have surprised a number of people with their performances in the Premier League but did our Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold see it coming?

Months back on August 9 we asked all of our staff at football.london to deliver their predictions for the coming Premier League season, including where teams would finish at the top end and lower reaches of the table, who would win the trophies domestically and in Europe, as well as who would be the best signings and the biggest flops.

Here are Alasdair's predictions for each category from back in August and then his reasons for those choices. At the end of it all we got him to look back in hindsight at his answers.

Alasdair's pre-season predictions

Premier League winners: Manchester City

Rest of the top four: Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham

Relegated: Nottingham Forest, Luton, Sheffield United

Golden Boot winner: Harry Kane

FA Cup winners: Tottenham

Carabao Cup winners: Manchester City

Champions League winners: Bayern Munich

Europa League winners: Liverpool

Signing of the summer: James Maddison

Flop of the season: Kai Havertz

Unexpected star of the season: Evan Ferguson.

The reasons: I think Ange Postecoglou will have a big impact at Tottenham and they will surprise a lot of people. I can also see Liverpool bouncing back this season and into the top spots.

There would also be a certain irony to Harry Kane scoring goals galore under Postecoglou yet Bayern winning the Champions League without the England captain. James Maddison is going to be a big help to Kane in the assists stakes.

Kai Havertz constantly treads the line between being a fantastic player and a flop and I reckon he'll edge into the latter this season. Evan Ferguson is a terrific young star in the making and I reckon he'll truly break out this season for Brighton.

Alasdair's verdict three months on

There's one obvious thing that certainly won't end up being right there - although technically if you ignore the explanation bit I hadn't said what league Harry Kane would win the Golden Boot in - but I'm happy with much of the rest.

I've got the top four spot on for now and in the right positions. I'd also have the bottom three right if it wasn't for pesky Burnley propping things up and Forest just being that little bit better than I expected.

I spoke about Postecoglou making a big impact and Spurs surprising people and also Liverpool bouncing back this season and that's all happened so far.

James Maddison is definitely the signing of the summer even with his current lay-off so that's right. As for the flop category, while he hasn't been absolutely horrendous, I think for £65million with one goal and one assist from 19 matches, Kai Havertz still hasn't exactly been value for money. In contrast, for Evan Ferguson, five goals in 11 Premier League games from a 19-year-old is excellent.

My Carabao Cup prediction won't happen because Manchester City are out but I'm still hopeful of my FA Cup prediction, especially if Spurs buy well in the January transfer window. Liverpool look on course to be fine in the Europa League and Bayern have won every game they've played in the Champions League so far.

Overall, not a bad bunch of predictions, but of course I'd have preferred it if a certain Harry Kane had stuck around.
