The 2023 summer transfer window for the Women's Super League will close in just under a week's time and Chelsea have been one of the busiest clubs.

Emma Hayes' side wrapped up their first deal on a pre-contract agreement back in March and they've significantly bolstered their squad with new arrivals and fresh contracts. However, there have also been some big-name exits that the Blues boss has had to navigate this summer.

Chelsea were crowned WSL champions in the 2022/23 season and also lifted the FA Cup for a third consecutive year after beating Manchester United in the final in May. The London club are one of the biggest clubs in the women's game and their shrewdness in the transfer market comes as no surprise.

Here's a round-up of the window so far including incomings, outgoings and contract extensions.

Incomings

Chelsea kicked off their summer business back in March with the announcement goalkeeper Nicky Evrard was set to join the club on July 1. The Belgian shot-stopper had been playing in her home nation with OH Leuven before agreeing a deal with the Blues until 2026.

Before the season had even finished, Chelsea announced their second signing in German midfielder Sjoeke Nusken. The 22-year-old joined from Eintracht Frankfurt, also on a three-year deal running until 2026.

Then, at the beginning of June, forward Catarina Macario joined on a free transfer from Lyon. The USA international missed this year's FIFA Women's World Cup as she continued her recovery from an ACL injury, with her full focus on building fitness ahead of the new season with Chelsea.

Soon after, the Blues announced another new arrival in 21-year-old defender Alejandra Bernabe from Atletico Madrid. She will spend the upcoming 2023/24 season on loan at Real Sociedad but it is believed she has the potential to become one of the best attacking full backs in the world.

Chelsea then confirmed the signing of defender Ashley Lawrence, who joined after spending six years in France with Paris Saint-Germain. The Canada international put pen to paper on a three-year deal, keeping her at Kingsmeadow until 2026.

The Blues then added Hannah Hampton to their goalkeeper ranks. The 22-year-old joined from WSL rivals Aston Villa following the expiration of her contract, although given the competition for places, it remains to be seen whether she will spend the 2023/24 season out on loan.

Chelsea's business continued with the addition of 18-year-old defender Brooke Aspin from Bristol City. The youngster helped the Robins to a promotion-winning campaign last term and will return for the upcoming 2023/24 season on loan.

American forward Mia Fishel signed at the beginning of August from Mexican side Tigres. The 22-year-old penned a three-year deal until the summer of 2026.

Dutch midfielder Wieke Kaptein was next through the door on a four-year deal. The 18-year-old returns to her homeland to continue her development with FC Twente.

Outgoings

As a trophy-laden campaign drew to a close, Chelsea confirmed the departures of two key names at the start of the summer. Club captain Magdalena Eriksson and forward Pernille Harder left following expiration of their respective contracts and joined German outfit Bayern Munich.

19-year-old Emma Thompson departed the club last month to join Championship side Southampton on a permanent deal. Charlotte Wardlaw will also continue her development away from Chelsea on loan with Glasgow City.

Contract extensions

Key to Chelsea's long-term success will be retaining top talent. Over the course of the season, the Blues have tied down some big names including Erin Cuthbert, Jessie Fleming, Jess Carter, Sophie Ingle, Melanie Leupolz and Zecira Musovic.

In more recent months, it was announced Chelsea exercised the option to extend Fran Kirby's contract by a further year, similar with 20-year-old goalkeeper Emily Orman. Norway international Maren Mjelde also signed a years extension with the club.

In even bigger news, 21-year-old Lauren James penned a long-term deal at the beginning of June that will see her remain with the Blues until 2027. Academy prospect Lexi Potter also became the first female player in the country to sign a professional contract at the age of 17, as she signed with the club until 2026 before joining Crystal Palace on loan for the 2023/24 season.
