Brentford are in discussions to extend David Raya's contract after a stellar first season in the Premier League, football.london understands.

His current deal is due to expire in 2024 and it is no surprise given Raya was one of Brentford's best players in their debut Premier League campaign last season. Raya joined the Bees from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2019, and after a rocky start in West London, he has proven to be one of Thomas Frank's key players and has made the transition from Championship to Premier League football like a duck to water.

The Spaniard was complimented by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after Brentford's topsy turvy 3-3 draw against Liverpool back in September, with the German stating that the Bees keeper could have had the number 10 on the back of his shirt.

The Bees won three of their first seven league games last season, before he sustained an injury in a 1-2 defeat against Leicester City in October. Brentford missed his presence hugely, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez proving to be very hot and cold with Frank missing his first choice keeper. In the 14 league games Raya would miss over the course of three months, Brentford only won three of them.

Following his return to action, Raya has been superb for Frank's side, performing week in week out. As a result, he was rewarded with a call up to the Spain national team during the March international break, making his debut in a 2-1 win over Albania. He has also been called up for their Nations League fixtures against Portugal, Czech Republic and Switzerland which take place next month.
