The Premier League's call to dock Everton 10 points for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules has provided reason for concern at Chelsea and Manchester City.
Both teams are facing similar, or worse, punishment due to their incompetence to follow the financial regulations. Allegations continue to be made against Roman Abramovich's time in west London, with a report claiming leaked files had included hidden payments to key figures.
City face much bigger problems with the Premier League making 115 separate allegations against the seven-time champions between 2009 and 2018. The investigation is still going on and it remains to be seen what punishment will be handed to Pep Guardiola's side.
Relegation or even seeing the club expelled from the top flight have all been discussed as potential penalties. However, a points deduction remains a viable option. So with that being said, football.london takes a look at times when teams in Europe have received a points deduction.
AC Milan, Fiorentina, Juventus, Lazio and Reggina
In 2006, one of the most famous footballing scandals took place. Calciopoli, as it is now known by, saw wiretaps, put into place by Italian police, implicate a number of clubs in match-fixing.
AC Milan, Fiorentina, Juventus, Lazio and Reggina were all accused of attempting to manage which referees would officiate their matches. In simple terms, the five clubs were charged for trying to choose referees who they believed were more likely to favour them.
No referee was found to have taken bribes but the clubs were all found guilty of manipulating matters, not explicitly match-fixing. And as you'd imagine, the punishments were severe.
Juventus were famously relegated to Serie B and forced to start the following campaign with a 15 point deduction. They were also stripped of two Serie A titles (2004/05 and 2005/06).
AC Milan were docked a combined total of 38 points across two seasons while Fiorentina (15), Lazio (three) and Reggina (11) all had points docked.
Luton Town
Luton's story from non-league to Premier League has a number of milestones earmarked throughout. Back in 2008/09, the Harriers suffered the biggest points deduction in Football League history with 30 points.
After being relegated from League One the year before - which saw them have 10 points deducted for entering administration - Luton were docked 10 points for irregular player transfers and another 20 for failing to exit administration.
Derby County
Before Everton's penalty, Derby's torrid time in the Championship in 2021/22 was the most recent high-profile case in England. The Rams had 12 points taken off for going into administration before another nine was deducted for breaching EFL accounting rules - totalling a whopping 21.
Wayne Rooney's men were relegated to League One.
Arminia Bielefeld
In Germany, Bielefeld took a 19-point hit in 1971/72 after a bribery scandal. In bizarre circumstances, all was revealed at the president of Kickers Offenbach's 50th birthday party when an audio tape of some of the 50+ players admitted their part.
Arminia's points deduction, unsurprisingly, left the club unmotivated to play at their best and they finished the 1971/72 season on 19 points.
Genoa
Dating back to the 1960s and another Italian point docking. This time with Genoa, who were penalised for match fixing.
They were deducted an eye-catching 18 points for bribery charges in 1960 before another 10, which were later reduced to seven, were handed the following season.
Leeds United
Leeds United's downward spiral after years of Premier League football hit rock bottom in the summer of 2007 when the club were relegated down to League One for the first time in their history.
The Whites started the campaign with -15 points after failing to comply with rules on exiting administration. A potential punishment that would have seen them drop out of the Football League was discussed, but a 15-point deduction was agreed. Amazingly, they recovered and suffered a play-off place.
