Everton points deduction

The Premier League have made an unprecedented decision to deduct Everton 10 points with immediate effect after the club were found to have breached financial rules. a A statement from the league on Friday confirmed the long-awaited decision, reading: "The Premier League issued a complaint against the Club and referred the case to an independent Commission earlier this year.

"During the proceedings, the Club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending Season 2021/22 but the extent of the breach remained in dispute. Following a five-day hearing last month, the Commission determined that Everton FC’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5million, as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of £105million permitted under the PSRs.

"The Commission concluded that a sporting sanction in the form of a 10-point deduction should be imposed." Everton intend to appeal the punishment but it is a warning for the Blues as they are also under investigation for alleged misdeeds during Roman Abramovich's tenure.

Fernandez in a brawl

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez played his part in a feisty affair between Argentina and Uruguay on Friday morning as a fight between the two teams started after just 20 minutes. The world champions would go on to lose for the first time in nearly 12 months, going down 2-0.

The game was full of early tension and a mass brawl broke out following a tackle on Lionel Messi with Fernandez quick to support his teammate. In the midst of the pushing and shoving between the two teams it is alleged that Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul shouted at Paris Saint-Germain and Uruguay's Manuel Ugarte, calling him a 'Messi c**k sucker.'

Ugarte retaliated and was pushed by Fernandez in the chest, shoving him with both hands. Messi then took matters into his own hands and held Mathias Olivera by the throat briefly as well.

Gallagher worry

England manager Gareth Southgate admitted that Conor Gallagher arrived on duty with the national team carrying a niggle ahead of the penultimate Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta on Friday. The 23-year-old has started every league games for the Blues this season, captaining in most of those.

The games in this break are ultimately meaningless in terms of competitive nature for England though and playing Gallagher with a knock is not something Mauricio Pochettino will be too keen to see. “He has got tremendous drive," Southgate said when quizzed on the impressive midfielder.

"This week was a classic for me. He has come with a bit of a knock from the weekend but he walked through the door saying ‘it is a bit sore but I will be fine for Friday’. There was no way he was going home, there was no way he wasn't going to give himself every chance.

"He wasn't able to train for the first few days but he was determined he would be available and that, in a nutshell, is what is going to be one of his greatest strengths which will allow himself to achieve everything he might in the game because his mentality is outstanding.”
