Japhet Tanganga has joined German club Augsburg on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham. Following a bit-part role at the club last campaign, the centre-back featured under Ange Postecoglou in pre-season but was not part of the matchday squad for the first four games of the new term.

Pushed even further down the pecking order by the arrival of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg, the Tottenham academy graduate always looked likely to move on prior to Friday's 11pm transfer deadline. Amid talk of a switch to Italy and also Premier League newboys Luton Town, Tanganga has put pen-to-paper on a loan deal with Augsburg.

The agreement with Spurs also contains an obligation to buy Tanganga if certain criteria are met.

Tanganga's move to Augsburg Arena will give him the opportunity to get some regular first-team football under his belt as that hasn't always been the case for him at Tottenham due to players ahead of him in the pecking order and also because of injury issues. In total, the former England Under-21 international made only seven appearances for Spurs last campaign, with four of them coming in the Premier League.

If Tanganga isn't involved in Augsburg's Bundesliga clash against VfL Bochum on Saturday, his debut for his new club could come away at RB Leipzig in the team's first game after the international break. The versatile defender will have to wait until the end of January to be reunited with ex-Spurs man Harry Kane as Augsburg are pencilled in to host Bayern Munich on Saturday, January 27.
