Brazil coach Fernando Diniz has provided an update on the fitness of Gabriel Jesus. The 26-year-old was controversially called up for Brazil national team duty despite being sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Jesus has not played since picking up the problem in Arsenal's 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League last month. The Gunners had hoped that he would be able to stay in London in order to continue his recovery, but Brazil utilised their right under FIFA laws to summon the 26-year-old to their training camp in Rio de Janeiro.

The move has sparked plenty of discussion with suggestions that it came as a result of Gabriel Martinelli's absence from the last camp despite having recovered from a hamstring injury of his own. Speaking in a press conference ahead of the Selecao's World Cup qualifier with Colombia though, Diniz insisted that he was acting in the best interests of Jesus.

"About Gabriel [Jesus], my whole life's work is not a concern in this sense with Arsenal or the national team," he said. "My concern is Gabriel. We brought him here for some reasons and that it was important to him. He was one of the players who even playing a match for us below our level in Uruguay, he managed to make a positive impact on the game, very difficult game but he got there.

"Play well, sustain position and create difficulty sometimes even kind of individually against Uruguay, I trust the player and him being here I take satisfaction.

"I talked to Gabriel and he didn't come here without planning. He said he's feeling good, he's already doing certain things, and when I spoke to him we had two more weeks, 10 days at least till the first game [against Colombia] and 15 days 'til the second one [against Argentina]. He is in good condition, we are doing things with great care. As soon as he arrived we made a new MRI we [are] treating him very carefully."

football.londonreported earlier on Wednesday that Jesus will not be part of the squad that travels to play Colombia. He has been involved in warm-ups during Brazil's training camp, but is not deemed ready to take to the field yet. There is still some hope that he could be available to play when the Selecao host Argentina next week.

"If he is in the right condition he will be available against Argentina," Diniz said. "If not for Gabriel I'm sure it was very important for him to come here, and he will return to Arsenal better than when he got here."

New head coach Diniz has been keen to foster a tight-knit atmosphere amongst his Brazilian national squad and has wanted to make sure as many of his big hitters as possible are present for national team meet ups as possible. It is understood that Arsenal will be in close contact with Brazil regarding Jesus' fitness over the coming fortnight.
