Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of several members of his Arsenal squad ahead of their Premier League clash with Burnley at the Emirates Staidum on Saturday. The Spaniard was dealt a double blow in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Sevilla in the Champions League as both Bukayo Saka and Takehiro Tomiyasu had to come off injured.
Saka's injury came just minutes before the end of the match as he appeared to land awkwardly when jumping for a header. "It was just a kick and I was told by the physios on the radio he wasn't happy to continue," Arteta said in his post-match press conference. "So he will have some discomfort but hopefully I am going to assume he will be OK."
Tomiyasu meanwhile came off at half-time to be replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko. "He had some discomfort in the first half and we didn’t want to take any risks because he’s played a lot of minutes," Arteta said of the Japan international's withdrawal. "Obviously with Alex on the bench ready to come in I think it was the right decision."
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend's match with Burnley, Arteta admitted that there were a few players still in contention for the game. "We have a few," he said. "A few still in contention. We need to give them 24 more hours to give them a chance. We won’t know anything till tomorrow."
Saka has since been called up to the England squad for their upcoming qualifiers. The 22-year-old missed the international window with a hamstring injury, but Arteta admitted that he's hopeful that Saka will still able to play for the Three Lions.
"Hopefully not," he said when asked if Saka could miss England duty. "We want our players to play for their club and their national team. B had to leave the pitch because he was in quite a lot of pain. He didn’t train yesterday. Let’s see if he can make it tomorrow."
Arsenal had already gone into the Sevilla game missing Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah. The former has not been fit since coming to register a consolation goal in last week's Carabao Cup loss to West Ham, while the latter has been struggling with an ankle injury since last Saturday's controversial 1-0 loss to Newcastle. Nketiah also missed out on the most recent England squad although Arteta stated that this did not necessarily mean he was absent for Saturday's clash with Burnley.
"I don’t know the real reason (why he was left out of the England squad)," he said. "I know how important he is for Gareth. I know how important it is for (Eddie) to be in the national team and much he enjoyed the last few experiences. That’s a decision that is not in my hands."
Odegaard meanwhile has been called up for the Norway squad over the coming international break. Speaking on Wednesday Arteta stated that the 24-year-old was racing against the clock to be fit. On Friday he added that little had changed.
"Still racing," the Spaniard said. "He’s trying everything that he can. Let’s see. It’s a possibility."
Gabriel Jesus is another who has been absent for just over a fortnight now with a hamstring injury sustained in the 2-1 Champions League victory away to Sevilla. Despite initial suggestions that the Brazilian may be out until December there are some hopes that he could be fit in time for Burnley after he was called up to his national team squad.
Arteta was asked specifically about the prospect of Jesus having to travel to South America despite being an injury concern, and admitted that the Gunners would be in close dialogue with the Selecao. "We always try to speak to the national teams and find a common sense," he said. "The only important thing here is the interest of the player and after, when we have secured that, what is the best interest of the national team and the club."

Thomas Partey meanwhile is unlikely to play again this year after having a procedure on his groin. Arteta stated that the procedure was not going to extend Partey's absence and stated that he intended to help the Ghanaian through his latest period on the sidelines.
"He’s progressing really well, but it was a significant injury," Arteta said. "I said hopefully it will be weeks not months and he’s working towards that. He needs support and hopefully the injury will heal in the right way and we’ll have him back because he’s a big player for us."
He joins Emile Smith Rowe and Jurrien Timber on the list of longer term absentees. Smith Rowe will not be back until December after picking up a knee injury earlier this month, while Jurrien Timber is potentially out for the season with an ACL injury sustained in August.
