Ange Postecoglou made it clear in his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon that it is better to conclude business at the beginning of the January transfer window. Tending to be later movers in the winter market in years gone by, Tottenham fans will be praying that Daniel Levy backs his head coach at the turn of the year and gets some deals over the line pretty sharpish.

Making some big strides in the summer market with some excellent additions, Tottenham will be hoping for more of the same if they are to add to their squad in January. All eyes, of course, will be on incomings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but there could well be some movement in terms of players heading out of the door.

So who could potentially depart in the January window as Postecoglou and Johan Lange plan for the future? football.london takes a look below.

Hugo Lloris

Making it clear he wanted to depart for a new challenge last summer, a transfer exit never came to fruition for Lloris and he still remains a Tottenham player. Named as part of Spurs' 25-man Premier League squad for the campaign but yet to make an appearance in a matchday squad under Postecoglou, the turn of the year could be the time when he brings his long association with the club to an end.

It's no good Lloris watching on from the stands on a matchday, especially now he's in the final few years of his career, and a January exit makes sense for all concerned. Hopefully that is the case so the Frenchman can get his career back on track.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Hojbjerg was another player tipped to depart Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer but a transfer away never quite happened. Previously a regular in the Tottenham XI, the Dane has dropped down to the bench this campaign but that hasn't stopped him playing a key role late in games.

Hojbjerg has been superb in some games and his leadership and experience has helped Tottenham get over the line and get maximum points on the board. Set to enter the final 18 months of his deal come the start of 2024, Tottenham's No.5 will undoubtedly be linked with a move away and offers could potentially arrive on the table.

While other clubs may want to lure him away from N17, it would make sense to keep him in the capital unless such a tempting bid is submitted as it's clear to see he still has a lot more to offer the team between now and May. It should be a rather straightforward decision for Tottenham, especially with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr set to head off for a period of time to play in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bryan Gil

Gil is another player who may also find himself in the headlines come January. Departing the club on loan at the turn of the year in the past two seasons, the Spaniard may be linked with another move away if his football is limited between now and January.

Spurs are going to lose Son Heung-min for a few matches at the start of the year due to his participation in the Asian Cup, thus giving Tottenham a big reason to keep Gil in the capital. A player who can be a big hit for Postecoglou in the final third, the next two months will be vital for the 22-year-old as he finally looks to make his mark for the club.

Ivan Perisic

Perisic may have already played his last game for the football club after sustaining a complex ACL injury in his right knee in non-contact training in September. It unfortunately is an injury that is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite question marks over when he will be next in action, reports from Croatia have suggested that the experienced player could be in line for a return to boyhood club Hajduk Split. If that is to be the case, Spurs could possibly sanction an early exit for the 34-year-old so that he can rejoin his hometown club.

Eric Dier

Set to enter the final six months of his Tottenham contract in January, Dier will be in the headlines regarding a transfer exit. From a financial perspective, Spurs really could do with cashing in on him rather than run the risk of losing him for nothing come the summer.

Dier has yet to make a single appearance for Tottenham this season and it doesn't look like that will change unless one of Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven picks up an injury or suspension. While it would make sense for Tottenham to part with the England international in the summer, from Dier's perspective it may be better to remain in N17 for the time being as he will have the pick of clubs in the summer and he would also then receive a big sign-on fee.

The 29-year-old will be able to speak to foreign clubs about a pre-contract agreement for the 2024/25 season and beyond from January.

Ryan Sessegnon

Sessegnon will be hoping he is in a position to return to action sooner rather than later after a nightmare start to the season through injury. Going under the knife on his hamstring in the summer, the left-sided player has yet to make an appearance under Postecoglou.

As the ex-Fulham man will be third in the pecking for the left-back spot once he returns, a January exit would make sense for all parties so he can get some regular football under his belt and get his career back on track. Emerson Royal has proved in recent games that he is an able deputy at left-back if required.

Alfie Whiteman/Brandon Austin

Tottenham are certainly well stocked for goalkeepers at present after Lloris failed to secure a move away in the summer. However, there could be some movement in that area of the pitch in January as the World Cup winner really needs to find a new club so he can play week in, week out.

A loan move would also be beneficial for either Whiteman or Austin. That may all depend on when exactly Whiteman returns to full fitness, though, as he had to undergo ankle surgery in August after picking up the injury on pre-season tour.
