At the start of the season, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou would've no doubt been revelling at the chance to manage a player like Harry Kane. The England captain's exit just a few days before the start of the season will have thrown those plans out of the window though.

A move to Bayern Munich left Spurs without their talisman, and Postecoglou knew it from day one. "I had a conversation with Harry the first day I arrived, he was upfront and honest and I was the same," he said earlier in the season. "You kind of get an indication that he had made up his mind that if the clubs agreed a deal, he would go.

"His emphasis was [to resolve his future] before the first game, that was mine as well, and there's been nothing along the way that made me feel like there was anything else other than this outcome."

Asked if he tried to convince Kane to stay, Postecoglou replied: "No, I didn't see the point in that. Whatever I was going to say wasn't going to be relevant to how he felt, being here for the last month.

"I could plan this grand vision but I'm sure he's heard it all before. Not that I was going to make a pitch for him, but my feeling was, 'we're going to get to know each other over the next month'.

"If [there was no agreement], he was happy to stay. He wasn't forcing it on me, he was very professional about it. I tried to treat him with the respect that a player of his standing deserves."

However, captain Son Heung-min has stepped up to often lead the line for Spurs, with summer signing Brennan Johnson and Richarlison contributing up front. But Postecoglou could have another option to turn to after his side has struggled to deal with injuries to their significant stars.

Players like James Maddison, Johnson and Richarlison have all suffered injury problems in this early part of the season, with the former now out until after the New Year with an ankle problem. Well, step up Jamie Donley.

The Under-21s star has been running riot in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy for Spurs, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists in their eight games so far, helping his side to a perfect start to the season. While he's yet to make his debut for the senior team, he has featured in the matchday squad a few times under Postecoglou and could now be set for a call-up.

Speaking to the club earlier this week, Spurs Under-18s coach Stuart Lewis praised the youngster and highlighted his versatility, something that Postecoglou could also use given his injury woes so far this season. He said: "I think Jamie's stats, goals and assists speak for themselves. But I also think his work rate and the manager [Postecoglou] has also spoken about the importance of how aggressive we are on the press and consistently doing that.

"I think Jamie's performances this season have been really impressive. We know the quality he has. Obviously, that left foot has scored some goals over the years for myself and the academy teams. You watch through some of these goals, they’re really high-level.

"It's important Jamie now brings that to training with the first-team and consistently doing that with the Under-21s. Hopefully, in time his opportunity comes and he’s ready."

He added: "I've seen Jamie do some outstanding moments within games at Under-13, 15 and 16 levels. They are of a high quality technically.

"Now it's about getting to the next step in his development and showing the manager and the coaching staff how good he can be and bringing that to training. But that left foot is pretty sweet and he's scored a few goals for myself, one from the halfway line last year. That was amazing.

"He's a creative player, he can see things on the pitch that are really exciting and he'll try things. He plays with bravery and he looks to hurt the opposition. Anywhere across that front area of the pitch. Playing off the right as well, as a No.9 or No.10."
